Chico is famous for its beautiful outdoor lifestyle. We have Bidwell Park, the farmer's markets, and endless hiking trails. However, when the winter and spring rains arrive, parents everywhere face the exact same challenge. How do we burn off all this kid energy without ruining the house?

If you are dealing with a case of cabin fever, do not worry. Chico has some fantastic indoor spaces designed to keep your little ones entertained, educated, and happily exhausted by nap time.

Here are four of my favorite local spots to save a rainy afternoon.

1. Gateway Science Museum Located right next to Bidwell Mansion, this museum is an absolute gem for curious kids. The exhibits change frequently, so there is always something new to see. It is highly interactive, allowing kids to touch fossils, learn about local wildlife, and participate in hands-on science experiments. It is the perfect mix of education and fun.

2. The National Yo-Yo Museum inside Bird in Hand You cannot live in Chico without visiting this downtown staple. Tucked inside the Bird in Hand toy store, you will find the world's largest public display of yo-yos, including a massive 256 pound yo-yo. After looking at the museum, kids can browse the incredible selection of unique toys, puzzles, and games.

3. Chico Children’s Museum Located right in the heart of downtown, this spot is a lifesaver for parents with toddlers and younger children. It features a giant indoor climbing tree, a sensory room, and a miniature town where kids can pretend to go grocery shopping or work in a vet clinic. It is a safe, enclosed space where they can run wild while you enjoy a moment of peace.

4. Cal Skate Chico If you have older kids who need to burn off some serious physical energy, roller skating is the answer. Cal Skate is a classic Chico establishment. They offer family skate sessions, great music, and a snack bar. It is a fantastic way to spend a gloomy afternoon and get some exercise indoors.
