A Town For All Seasons
Gold discoveries in 1848 in Mother Lode locations along the western slope of Sierra Nevada Mountains led to people flocking to California from all over the world in 1849, these people were known as '49ers. William Gwynn and H. M. House established the first general stores in Auburn to serve the surrounding mining camps. Today, The City of Auburn is considered one of the best places to live in Northern California. It's bordered by the beautiful American River Canyon and nestled in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Located at the crossroads of I-80 and historic Highway 49, Auburn is the county seat of Placer County. The City encompasses approximately 7.5 square miles, situated at elevations between 1,000 and 1,400 feet, the surroundings offer an awesome seasonal change. Auburn is committed to supporting the arts in the community, including public art, theatre, music, dance and the many local artists that exhibit their works in the art galleries and businesses. Auburn is home to the challenging Western States Endurance Run Ultra Marathon and the grueling Western States Endurance RideTevis Cup held each year. Historic Old Town Auburn is the location for special events all year round, starting with a Saturday morning Foothill Farmer's Market featuring Placer Grown fruits and vegetables. Spring and fall antique street fairs, summer movies under the stars, a spring art and wine faire and two Country Christmas evenings highlight the calendar.
